Why does it cost this much?
Our politicians, backed by an army of consultants, lawyers, and lobbyists, have spent decades making it effectively illegal to build in Britain. They created a complex system that prioritises process over outcomes, and backs the blockers over the doers. Now, we spend hundreds of millions on installing boomboxes in rivers for salmon to listen to.
Methodology
The calculator divides the total cost of a government project by the average UK family's lifetime tax contribution:
The figure of £1,277,580 is the average UK family's total tax contribution over a lifetime, sourced from the TaxPayers' Alliance.
The result is rounded to the nearest whole number. It represents how many families would need to dedicate their entire lifetime of tax payments to fund a single project.
Project costs are sourced individually — click "Source" on each project card for details.
