Repair Parliament Bill
Repair Parliament Bill

Petition
Parliament needs repair. But the current official plan could take up to 61 years and cost up to £39.2 billion. Even now, the recommendation is for a £3 billion first phase of preparatory works, with the final decision on the long-term plan delayed until 2030.
After years of drift, around £270 million has already been spent on plans that were then paused and reset. Taxpayers are still paying around £1.5 million every week just to maintain and repair the Palace, while no core restoration has begun. Every extra year of delay adds another £70 million in maintenance costs and £250–350 million in construction inflation.
At the top end, the current plan would cost about the same as 1.25 million one-year police constable starting salaries, 1.18 million one-year teacher starting salaries, or around 30 hospital schemes.
That must change. LFG has written The Repair Parliament Bill which would replace this failing system with a hard deadline of 31 December 2031, a tightly limited essential-only scope, and real accountability for delivery. Parliament should be restored properly, quickly and at far lower cost.
That is why we are today demanding MPs must back The Repair Parliament Bill and end this cycle of pause and reset. The Palace should be restored properly, quickly, and at far lower cost.
In 2015, the Government started collecting records (called LEO – Longitudinal Education Outcomes) that explicitly connect universities and degrees with average earnings, intended to “enable parents and students to make more informed choices concerning education and employment destinations”.
Despite this apparent aim, successive governments have refused to make the full records public. Instead, they have given access to only a tiny selection of approved researchers, and published only limited, curated data.
This must change. The Government must release the records. They must also compel universities to disclose course-level average earnings, employment rates, non-completion rates and typical lifetime repayments in their marketing. Students and parents should be able to make choices with the full facts.
That is why we are today demanding that the Government releases the full anonymised records.
Students, parents and the public should be able to make choices with the full facts. They should know the truth.
