LETTER: ACCEPT ALL
LETTER: ACCEPT ALL
Dear Prime Minister and Chancellor,
Please accept ALL of the recommendations of the Nuclear Regulatory Review 2025. Families are suffering under sky-high energy bills. We need new nuclear power urgently to bring household bills down and support British jobs with lower industrial electricity prices.
Energy costs are too high and they are crippling Britain's economy, making it more difficult to start, continue or grow businesses in this country. Britain needs more and more electricity to meet this demand and achieve energy independence. That means we urgently need vastly more nuclear power. It is the most reliable and scalable form of clean energy Britain can get.
Currently, the UK is the most expensive place to build a nuclear power station on the planet, driven by our broken regulatory system, as the Review highlights. To take just one example: Hinkley Point C's price skyrocketed from £18 billion to £46 billion, and it will take 19 years to build, driven by the more than 7,000 design changes imposed by regulators mid-build, as well as legal challenges and other regulatory obstacles. Our system prioritises £100 million bat tunnels and £700 million fish discos above lowering energy bills for British businesses and households.
The Nuclear Regulatory Review 2025 has given recommendations to cut years off build times and billions off costs without compromising safety, including:
- Creating a Single 'Commission for Nuclear Regulation' to replace the paralysis caused by multiple regulators making conflicting demands.
- Defining 'Tolerability of Risk' so that costs of rule-making are not grossly disproportionate to risks, ending the current system that ratchets up infinite cost increases without any meaningful safety benefit.
- Introducing a 'Nature Fund' for strategic nature recovery that replaces years of habitat surveys that delay construction.
- When a reactor design has been approved, stop assessing the same design as though it is new on subsequent sites, enabling fleets of reactors to be built.
- Stopping frivolous judicial reviews and preventing objectors from making multiple challenges, and allowing construction to continue while they are pending.
Please adopt all 47 of the review's recommendations in full. Time is running out to lower the cost of living and save British industry.
