Oxford
About the chapter
Oxford stands as a hub of talent, a nexus for technology, science and engineering, and a vibrant city community. The potential for high-value jobs and entrepreneurship vital to the UK's global competitiveness is huge.
Despite these strengths, Oxford faces housing strains that threaten its momentum. Median home prices sit 50% above the UK average, pushing many away from the city. Poor transport links both by road and notably trains (due to high costs and poor service) exacerbate the brain drain away including towards London. Oxford needs to stand on its own feat as a center of innovation and growth.
There are reasons for optimism in the near future, such as East-West Rail (EWR) which can fix Oxford's interconnection challenges through string links across the Oxford-Cambridge divide, reducing a pure reliance on London. The local community should also stand ready to apply pressure against regulatory obstacles that might jeopardize taking advantage of these opportunities. This will retain talent in the region and drive innovation for a better future.
