Cambridge
About the chapter
Cambridge is one of the UK's most productive and innovative cities — home to world-class universities, cutting-edge research institutes, and a thriving tech and life sciences ecosystem. It has the potential to be a national engine of economic growth, driving discovery, jobs, and prosperity not just locally, but for the whole country. But that potential is being throttled.
The city faces severe and worsening constraints on its ability to grow. A chronic lack of housing — particularly for early-career researchers, NHS workers, and those on mid incomes — is driving up costs and pushing people out. Lab space, the very infrastructure needed to turn research into real-world innovation, is in dangerously short supply. Water, transport, and energy systems are close to capacity. But the biggest blockers aren't technical — they're institutional and political.
LFG Cambridge exists to change that. We're here to make the case for smart, sustainable growth — and to push our local councils and decision-makers to unlock more homes, more infrastructure, and more opportunity. We believe the region has a responsibility to lead — and we're organising to ensure it can.
